Addressing the lack of expertise on entrepreneurship among the Roma population, FOSIM in cooperation with the Business Cooperation Centre from Skopje initiated the pilot-project for Roma trainers. The goal of the training was to increase the number of Roma trainers able to deliver training in the domain of economic development and entrepreneurship in the Republic of Macedonia.
The training course was comprised of five modules covering the following eight topics: -motivation skills,

-communication skills,
-presentation skills,
-facilitation skills,
-time management and planning,
-training needs assessment,
-monitoring and evaluation techniques and
-reporting.
Training sessions were implemented in the period March-June 2007. Upon completion, the most successful participants will be given the opportunity to attend additional specialized training in the field of entrepreneurship, and be engaged as assistant trainers on entrepreneurship training.

First ToT (Trainig of Trainers) for Roma in Republic of Macedonia

The “Human Capacity Development Program for Roma NGOs and the Roma Business Community” (HCDP) was funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), through World Learning (WL) and implemented by the Center for Institutional Development (CIRa). Its effort was part of USAID’s continuing support to the Roma in the Republic of Macedonia, and contributed to the Decade of Roma Inclusion regional initiative in CE and SEE.

Milestones/Objectives of the Program
:
Phase 1: Selection of Roma NGOs, Selection of Roma Assistant Trainers and Preparation of Training Packages
Phase 2: Human Capacity Development and Grassroots Information Dissemination to Roma Businesses

Phase 3:
Creation of Roma Training Core Team

Phase 4: Provision of EFL + Academic/Certificates/Summer Schools + Study
Tours
Phase 5: Provision of Implementation Grants

Phase 3:
Creation of Roma Training Core Team
CIRa designed a systematic approach for building assistant trainers’ knowledge and skills for conducting trainers’ work. The model used was a combination of theoretical knowledge, practical work and mentoring relation with an experienced trainer. Three Training of Trainers (ToTs) were delivered for the assistant trainers within the program

-ToT 1- Four-day training where the trainees learned the basic knowledge and skills for delivering trainings, focusing on: training needs assessment, adult learning styles, designing training programs, training techniques, communication, training evaluation and reporting. Also, at the end of the training, the trainees had an opportunity to design and present training sessions and get feedback for potential improvement points.

-ToT 2- Three-day training that gathered the key trainers and the assistant trainers and worked on establishing teams of 2 (one key and one assistant trainer), team-building and developing mentoring relations. This training provided the opportunity for the teams to deliver their first joint session.

-ToT 3- Whilst the first two trainings were designed to prepare the assistant trainers for their practical work in training delivery, the third ToT focused on improving the aspects of their work identified during their challenges as assistant trainers. This ToT upgraded assistant trainers’ skills in designing and delivering training sessions.

In addition to the training part, the process of developing assistant trainers’ skills included practical delivery of at least 2 trainings per trainer and continuous mentoring relations with an experienced trainer who counseled his/her assistant in all stages of the actual preparation, delivery and training reporting.

Program implementation period: June 1st
December 27th, 2005
